New Bargains!

We have just added 28 books of doubtful character to our Bargain Basement.

These are mostly ancient-and-don't-they-look-it bound Railway Magazines and Locomotive Magazines; there are also three world-weary Railway Clearing House maps and two regrettable books. All described in hideous detail so you know what you are getting.

Check the Basement to see whether we have listed the very volume you wanted for a working copy.

Michael Portillo's Bradshaw

For his television programme Mr Portillo is using a copy of Bradshaw's Tourist Handbook. He refers to it as a "Bradshaw's Guide", but the real Bradshaw's Guide is the well-known series of monthly time tables published between 1839 and 1960, of which we have a few in stock including some listed in the Secondhand Showcase on this site (scroll down about 1/3 of the page). This Bradshaw's Guide contains no tourist information, except for hotel advertising.

Bradshaw's Tourist Handbook, Mr Portillo's guide, is unfortunately extremely scarce. The individual parts turn up from time to time, but to get all four together is most unusual. The one Mr Portillo is using came from us (of course!) but it is the only complete set we have ever seen. Sadly we have no more, even of the individual parts, to offer at present.

Bradshaw also produced an annual publication called Bradshaw's Railway Manual, Shareholders' Guide And Directory. This doesn't have any tourist information, either.

Puzzle

Just fallen from an LNER time table, a quarto form headed Foreign Companies' Empty Wagons On Hand And Required. There is a blank table for recording wagon numbers by owning company. The companies listed are:

GC; GE; GN; GW; LB≻ L&Y; L&NW; L&SW; Midland; NE; All other Companies via London.

So not an LNER form; but it does not say whose though there are clues in the Instructions on the reverse. Guesses on one side of an e-mail please.

Consensus opinion posted here next week.

Titles of Bradshaw British time tables

Recently a question arose about the several changes of title of the classic Bradshaw time table over the years. I thought it would be easy to trace the changes from the data from old Showcases, but I was wrong.

The table below is compiled from time tables catalogued for our web site since 2001 and from some in stock at the time of writing. It only gives a rough guide as to when changes of name took place. The title on a Bradshaw title page is never the same as the one on the cover and I didn't realise this back in 2001. The title page title is of course the correct one but it is not always clear now whether I have catalogued the title page or the cover title; where this is uncertain I have noted it.

Dates Title page Added to title on cover / Alternative title on cover
>1928 Bradshaw's General Railway And Steam Navigation Guide For Great Britain And Ireland
1930 - Nov 1937 Bradshaw's General Railway, Steam Navigation, & Hotel Guide For Great Britain And Ireland
Jul 1938 - Jun 1939 Bradshaw's Railway, Shipping & Hotel Guide (uncertain whether this is from cover or title page)
Oct 1939 - Jul 1946 Bradshaw's Guide For Great Britain And Ireland Bradshaw's Guide To The British Railways
Feb 1947 Bradshaw's [Official]* Guide For Great Britain And Ireland (uncertain whether this is from cover or title page)
Jul 1947 - Bradshaw's British Railways [Official] Guide See below
Jul 1948 Bradshaw's Guide To The British Railways (uncertain whether this is from cover or title page)
Aug 1949 - Mar 1953 Bradshaw's [Official] Guide For Great Britain And Ireland See below
By Feb 1961 Bradshaw's British Railways [Official] Guide See below
Jul 1947 - 1961   Bradshaw's British Railways [Official] Guide and hotel directory

* Post-war issues bear the decorative addition in a smaller typeface of the words "Official" and "Every Month" on either side of the word "Guide" on the cover and on the title page; I disdained the addition of "Every Month" to the title, but kept "Official"; however in a reference to the copyright the publishers leave "Official" out of the title too.
