The Arsenal and its railways continued to hold an important place in gun and propellant manufacture until the late 1950s, when the complex began gradually to be run down, finally closing in 1967. The story of the Arsenal is fraught with intererest for railway and military historians alike and this well-written and choicely illustrated chronicle is sure to please both. William Pickersgill And The Caledonian Railway '956' Class Locomotives. Ref: LC3428

An objective assessment.
Peddie.
Very large, 168 pages, many photo illustrations, drawings, diagrams, glazed boards. ** The 956 class of four locomotives was designed to work 425 ton passenger express trains between Glasgow and Carlisle or Aberdeen. The locomotives were out-shopped in 1921. They had three cylinders and a novel 2:1 derived motion for the centre cylinder. Unaccountably a number of recognised technical imperatives were neglected, initial tests were disappointing and the locomotives withdrawn at an early date. This book analyses the failings, their probably causes and the potential modifications which could have been implemented.
It was a handsome, powerful-looking 4-6-0; making one to work properly would be a worthwhile project for the new-build steam contingent.

Merthyr Tydfil Tramroads And Their Locomotives. Ref: LC1785

Rattenbury, G & Lewis, M J T.
Medium, 88 pages, illustrated with photographs, line drawings, reproductions of contemporary views and maps, soft back. **The Merthyr (or Penydarren) Tramroad was opened in 1802 to convey the products of Merthyr's four large ironworks to the canal at Abercynon. Its place in the history of railways is fundamental: it was the site of the 1804 run of Trevithick's locomotive - the first steam engine to run on rails. Later many more engines were used on the road, most of them highly idiosyncratic designs from the Neath Abbey Irorworks. This book, which marks the bicentenary, combines two works on this system: Gordon Rattenbury's history of the tramroad, not previously published, and Michael Lewis's history of the motive power, an extensively revised and enlarged verion of his 1975 work Steam On The Penydarren.
