25. British Railway Journal 1983-2004.
Volumes 1-8 containing issues 1-73, a complete set of the first series.
** Standard A4 format, approximately 300-450pp per volume, with numerous illustrations
and diagrams. BRJ was introduced by the recently formed Wild Swan publishing
concern to provide an outlet for 'serious' railway writing and research of
the kind that was no longer accepted by the mass market railway periodicals.
In this endeavour it succeeeded admirably and its pages contain a large amount
of information not readily obtainable elsewhere. Like all Wild Swan publications
the production standards are extremely high, particularly in the way that
fine detail has been coaxed out of ancient and faded prints. BRJ was originally
published quarterly but after a few years gradually fell behind schedule and
eventually the issues ceased to be dated. This set is bound in royal blue
cloth by DJ Bookbinders, the binding pattern being repeatable if the buyer
wishes. An index has been added to each volume. Price £400
**NB. After a break of four years BRJ has recommenced publication from #74.
Copies of this issue - and its successor we hope - are available new from
the shop and by post.

74. Modellers' Back Track 1991-1994
New In The Market.
A complete run of this short-lived but attractive magazine. Standard
A4 format, bi-monthly publication, 54 pages per issue with plenty of photo
illus in colour and black and white. Four years in all, bound in two substantial
volumes. Dark red cloth with gilt titling on the spines. All the original
covers have been preserved within the binding.
The strapline of Modellers' Back Track was "Moving Models Closer To The
Prototype." Its aim was not to compete with the conventional modelling
magazines but to provide information on detail and liveries so that more realistic
models could be constructed. We think that it succeeded brilliantly, but there
were insufficient subscribers and after four years MB was merged with the
parent Back Track magazine on a revised monthly publication schedule. Not
now an easy series to obtain. Price for this set: £120
75. Railway Bylines 1996-2007
New In The Market.
A very fine run of Volumes 1-12 right up to date. Standard A4 format,
bi-monthly for the first two years, nine issues in 3rd year, then monthly
from commencement of Volume 4. About 52 pages per issue with photos, maps
and other illustrations. Bound in 11 volumes (vol 1 and 2 as a double), red
cloth by DJ, gilt titles on spines, all original covers retained.
Railway Bylines has gained an enthusiastic following from those who prefer
the byways and backwaters of railway history to the conventional main line
stuff.. Its all here: obscure branch lines, run down industrial systems, odd
forms of propulsion that never quite made it into mass production, nooks,
corners, huts and bothies. Price for this set: £480
68. Railway Bylines Winter Annual 1-6
New in the market
A complete set of this short-lived series published every Christmas as
an offshoot of the monthly Railway Bylines Magazine. Oversize A4 format, 96
pages per volume. Contents similar to the main magazine: railway byways of
Great Britain, branch lines, industrial railways, nooks and corners, eccentric
survivors from the past. Plenty of illustrations. Laminated board covers,
all volumes in 'as new' condition. Price: £85
69. Railway Bylines Summer Annual 1-6
New in the market
A complete set of this shortlived series published every summer as an
offshoot of the monthly Railway Bylines Magazine. Oversize A4 format, 96pp,
plenty of illustrations. Contents similar to the main magazine: railway byways
of Great Britain, branch lines, industrial railways, nooks and corners, eccentric
survivors from the past. Laminated board covers, all volumes in 'as new' condition.
Price: £85
63. Railways South East 1987-1993
A complete run of the twelve 6-monthly issues contained in three
of the publisher's neat cordex binders. A4 format published by Capital Transport
Publishing. About 60pp per issue, thus 720+ pages in all. Long articles of
great interest, profusely illustrated in colour and b/w. Area covered is Greater
London and the Home Counties. In our view the finest railway periodical ever
published in this country. Unfortunately the 6-month publishing schedule did
not fit the conventions of the newsagency trade and the distribution problems
were insurmountable. It was a sad loss when it closed. Price: £60

format, about 700-800pp per year. Contains historical articles mainly of the
1945-1968 period. Strong on articles by former railwaymen such as Dick Hardy
and Stanley Hall. Little or no 'preservation' or present day steam operation.
