An unbroken run of issues 1-54 Standard A4 format, 64 pages per issue, plenty
of illustrations and no advertising. Laminated card cover, square back. Archive
is the only British magazine on industrial history that has a national circulation.
Well-researched articles and high standard of presentation. Most issues have
at least one article of railway interest. Condition 'as new' throughout. Current

Issues 1-40 bound in seven volumes. Issued quarterly, 64 pages in each issue
with numerous illus, maps and diagrams. The original laminated covers have
been retained within the bindings. Bound in flame-red cloth by Mike Sullivan.
Archive was the first commercially successful industrial archaeology magazine
to be published in Great Britain. It has the happy knack of combining research
and scholarship with popular appeal. From the library of the late Ron Hoskins.

Volumes 1-23 bound as 19 books. Published originally by Atlantic, more recently
by Pendragon. First issues are quarterly, then bi-monthly. Monthly publication
from vol 9 to the present. Standard A4 format, about 700 pages per volume.
Contains thoughtful and often provoking historical articles and extensive
use of colour illustrations. The original colour covers have been retained.
Bound in dark green cloth by DJ Bookbinders, which can be repeated for further
volumes in the series if the buyer so wishes.
Back Track was the first of the 'new wave' railway periodicals from the smaller
publishing houses which were more concerned with historical accuracy and production
values than mass circulation. Still going strong today under Michael Blakemore's
editorship. Price: £695

Bound volumes 1-8 containing issues 1-73 together with the five GWR, LMS and
GER special issues bound together in a ninth volume. Standard A4 format, approximately
300 to 450 pages per volume with numerous illustrations and diagrams. Bound
in dark blue cloth by Mike Sullivan. BRJ was started by the then newly founded
Wild Swan Publications to provide an outlet for 'serious' railway writing
and research of the kind that was no longer catered for by the mass market

159. Great Western Journal 1992-2009

Volumes 1-9 (issues 1-72 complete) and also including the scarce unnumbered
introductory issue and the Special Cornish issue of 1992. Published by Wild
Swan, four issues a year, and two years to a volume. A4 format, mostly 40
pages per issue, about 480 pages per volume. The premier magazine for recording
GWR history containing long feature articles, shorter contributions, fine
illustrations in b/w and colour, maps, plans, correspondence. Very well produced
as with all Wild Swan publications. Newly bound by DJ Bookbinders in dark
green cloth with gilt titles. The binding is repeatable for future volumes.

158. Midland Record, Issues 1994-2009 + Extras
New In The Market
A good long run of issues 1-29 of this attractive bi-annual devoted
to all matters concerning the Midland Railway, its routes, locomotives, rolling
stock, structures, and operations, edited by Bob Essery. Lengthy articles
and well illustrated, about 80 pages per issue, published in laminated covers
which have been retained within the hard covers. As well as the main magazine
this set also contains the scarce Special Preview issue, the MR American Locomotives
Issue of 1997 and the MR Wagons Special Issue of 1998. All bound in six substantial
volumes in the publishers official maroon bindings having the ornate "Midland
Record" device in gilt on the upper boards. A very fine set. Price:

A fine set of issues 1-18 bound in 4 volumes. Published twice a year
by Wild Swan and edited by noted MR expert Bob Essery. Standard A4 format,
about 64 pages per issue lavishly illustrated. Laminated card covers which
have been retained in this set. Professionally bound in flame-red cloth by
Mike Sullivan. Further volumes can be bound in similar style if the buyer
so wishes. Midland Record is coming along nicely and now forms a vast repository
of information concerning all aspects of the Midland Railway. From the library

A very fine run of volumes 1-14. The arrangement of contents is bi-monthly
for the first two years, nine issues in 3rd year, then monthly from commencement
of Volume 4. Standard A4 format, about 52 pages per issue, idiosyncratic articles
about the byways and backwaters of railway history, obscure branch lines,
run-down industrial systems, odd forms of propulsion from the past, nooks,
crannies, huts and bothies. Photos, maps and other illustrations. Bound in
13 volumes (vol 1 and 2 as a single book). Neatly bound in red cloth by DJ,
gilt titles on spines. Price: £500
160. Railways South-East 1987-1993
New In The Market
A complete run of the twelve 6-monthly issues bound as one volume.
Published by Capital Transport Publishing. A4 format, 64 pages an issue, this
approx 750 pages in total. Long articles of absorbing interest, profusely
illustrated in b/w and colour, letters, notes and news. Covering railway history
and development in London and the Home Counties, in our view it was the finest
railway periodical ever produced in this country. Alas the 6-monthly publishing
cycle did not fit the conventions of the newsagency trade and distribution
problems became insurmountable. It was a sad loss when it closed. Dark green

118. Steam Days 1986-1999
Issues 1-124 inclusive, originally published quarterly, then monthly from
1991. Format is A4 for the first three volumes, then slightly over A4. Page
count runs up to 750-800 pages per year. Contents are wholly British and entirely
historical, mainly of the period 1930 to 1968. With numerous colour and b/w
illus. Originally intended as a "Trains Illustrated" revival for
those of a certain age, Steam Days developed a vigorous life of its own under
the editorship of Rex Kennedy, and is now one of the most attractive steam-era
magazines on the market. Bound in ten volumes in mid-green cloth by DJ Bookbinders,
which can re repeated for further volumes. SOLD

A good bound run of issues 1-156 of this smart and informative magazine
produced by Platform Five Publishing. For the first two years issued bi-monthly,
after that monthly to the present. A4 format, mostly approx 700 pages per
volumes, profusely illustrated, mainly in colour. Major articles on routes
and systems are usually accompanied by good, clear maps. In the early years
the material was mixed British and Continental, and is now exclusively the
latter (British coverage appears in the sister magazine Entrain/Today's Railways
UK) Professionally bound in 13 volumes in orange cloth by D J Book Binders.
