Back Track was the first of the 'new wave' railway periodicals from the smaller publishing houses which were more concerned with historical accuracy and production values than mass circulation. Still going strong today under Michael Blakemore's editorship. Price: £450

25. British Railway Journal 1983-2004.

Volumes 1-8 containing issues 1-73, a complete set of the first series. ** Standard A4 format, approximately 300-450pp per volume, with numerous illustrations and diagrams. BRJ was introduced by the recently formed Wild Swan publishing concern to provide an outlet for 'serious' railway writing and research of the kind that was no longer accepted by the mass market railway periodicals. In this endeavour it succeeeded admirably and its pages contain a large amount of information not readily obtainable elsewhere. Like all Wild Swan publications the production standards are extremely high, particularly in the way that fine detail has been coaxed out of ancient and faded prints. BRJ was originally published quarterly but after a few years gradually fell behind schedule and eventually the issues ceased to be dated. This set is bound in royal blue cloth with gilt titles and spine striping by DJ Bookbinders, the binding pattern being repeatable if the buyer wishes. An index has been added to each volume. Price: £400
[Location: back shop]
**NB. After a break of four years BRJ has recommenced publication from #74. Copies of this issue - and its successor we hope - are available new from the shop and by post.

74. Modellers' Back Track 1991-1994

A complete run of this short-lived but attractive magazine. Standard A4 format, bi-monthly publication, 54 pages per issue with plenty of photo illus in colour and black and white. Four years in all, bound in two substantial volumes. Dark red cloth with gilt titling on the spines. All the original covers have been preserved within the binding.
The strapline of Modellers' Back Track was "Moving Models Closer To The Prototype." Its aim was not to compete with the conventional modelling magazines but to provide information on detail and liveries so that more realistic models could be constructed. We think that it succeeded brilliantly, but there were insufficient subscribers and after four years MB was merged with the parent Back Track magazine on a revised monthly publication schedule. Not now an easy series to obtain. SOLD

All the original covers have been retained and the annual indexes added. The set is bound two years per volume in dark green cloth by DJ Bookbinders. The binding style is repeatable for subsequent volumes if the buyer so wishes.

New In The Market

A complete 6-volume run of this attractive modern-traction magazine from the Ian Allan stable. Large A4 format, colour and b/w illus throughout. Articles, new and photo features, listings of motive power. Contents almost entirely British. The reason for its closure had nothing to do with lack of quality, more the smallness of the market at that time for modern traction publications . 75. Railway Bylines 1996-2007

Railway Bylines has gained an enthusiastic following from those who prefer the byways and backwaters of railway history to the conventional main line stuff..
